Everton FC

Short History

Everton FC was formed in 1878 as a church team, St Domingo’s FC. A year later, 1879, it changed its name to Everton FC after the parish in Liverpool where it is located. This change of name allowed players from outside of St Domingo’s to play. Everton was one of the first teams to pay players. In 1888 they became one of the founding members of the Football League, the first league for professional teams. They have won the league championship on 9 occasions, 5 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and 1 European Cup Winners Cup. The past two seasons they have finished 5th in the English Premier League, considered the best league in the world. They have done this using mainly home grown talent. Their youth system is regarded as one of the best systems around.

Why the terms Football and Soccer?

As we all know, most of the world refers to soccer as football. We use the term “soccer” to differentiate from American Football. But, why do we call it “soccer”?  The correct name of the sport is Association Football. The term soccer is derived from the “Association”.

There are six sports that are played around the world that use the term football in their name: American Football, Australian Football, Gaelic Football, Rugby Union Football, Rugby League Football and of course, Association Football. In each sport, if the team is performing well, they are said to be playing great football. Association Football is the one sport where most of the skill is mainly with the feet, although foot skills are used somewhat in all the games.

Where does the term “Football” come from? We have to go back to the Middle Ages to find the answer. In those times there were many ball games. Some were played on horse back and some were played on “foot”. All of the six sports mentioned are played with a ball and on foot. Hence, the name “Football”.

Coaching Courses

At this time the club is looking into hosting coaching courses for both Competitive and Recreational Coaches. Keep checking the website and your email for updates.

Referee Course

We have had close to 70 people indicate that they are interested in taking the referee certification course. We are now waiting for the local Referees Association to give us the dates and times. With so many interested we may have to move off site to accommodate the numbers.  We will post the information online and email all those who sent in requests for the course as soon as it becomes available.

Everton Florida Fall Challenge
We will be hosting the second annual Fall Challenge for competitive teams from September 12th – 14th at Puryear Park. Last year we entertained 70 teams; this year’s tournament looks to be even bigger.

Private Lessons
If you are considering private lessons for your child, a list of available coaches can be found on our website (www.evertonfl.org) under the side bar “ Personal Training”.
The following coaches are interested in private training:
Nate Bender
  Bendernr@eckerd.edu
Eric Jameson
   liverpoolgoalie@yahoo.com
Joe McCauley
   mccaulje@eckerd.edu
Asmir Pervin
  asmir.pervan@saintleo.edu

 No Dogs at Puryear Park
We encourage you to leave your dog at home during games and practice. The only dogs allowed around the playing areas during practice and games are “Seeing Eye Dogs” and “Seeing Eye Dogs in Training”. You may have a well trained dog. However, we cannot guarantee that all the children are trained to not tease your dog.  We constantly receive complaints from parents and children that there are dogs at the facility (leased or unleashed). Not all people are dog lovers. We ask for your cooperation and please do not become indignant when we ask you to remove your dog. We are looking out for the welfare of all our members
